Fast-growing large tree, one of the best for exposed sites and coastal areas, growing in almost any conditions.
Providing a grand, domed outline in the countryside when mature. Casts a heavy shade from its dense leaves. Sycamore is a deciduous species, and although technically not native to the UK, it has become one of the most common maples in the countryside. The large palm-shaped leaves on their long stalks fall off as winter approaches.

The Birch is a favourite specimen tree and native to much of Europe.
The bark is usually (but not always) white. Flowers April and May.
Easy to grow in most soils and in the sun or shade.
Birch are shallow rooted, so watering during hot dry periods is especially important when young. Can grow to around 30m high.

The Sorbus, or Mountain Ash, is a native tree. It's graceful and slender and gives season long colour, from white and cream flowers in early summer to golden leaves and colourful berries in autumn.
This Rowan is a Mountain Ash, which can grow up to a maximum of around 25ft. Very popular as a street tree grown in urban locations as well as gardens.
The Rowan is not fussy about being in the sun or shade, and doesn't need heavy pruning.

This Common Ash tree is another native favourite, with large spreading branches.
It is late coming into leaf, and can reach up to 40ft, with a large root system, so should not be planted too close to property. In summer, bunches of its fruits hang from the twigs.
