The Birch is a favourite specimen tree and native to much of Europe. The bark is usually (but not always) white. Flowers April and is easy to grow in most soils and in the sun or shade.

Birch are shallow rooted, so watering during hot dry periods is especially important when young. Can grow to around 30m high.

A familiar spreading tree, with large twisting branches.

Small white flowers in May and June produce a fruit later on.

Native to much of Europe and anciently domesticated. A British garden favourite.

This particular tree was grown from a natural fallen seed in Somerset woodland, so is a real authentic Somerset apple tree!

The European Larch is a conifer which loses its leaves in the winter.

In spring new bright green tufts appear. A graceful tree with down swept branches and leaves which turn golden in autumn.

Quick growing and can reach 15ft after just 10 years, and continues to grow very tall.

This dense evergreen is easy to care for and will grow in shady areas.

Native Copper Beech, grown in a container to enable all year round planting. This variety is one of the first to produce green leaves in spring, and the autumn colours come later and stay on the stems all winter.

Medium green leaves turn rich copper in autumn.

For hedges 3ft (90cm) upwards Plant 9-18ins (23-45cm) apart. Trim in late summer.

In tree form, can reach 35ft (11m) in 20 years, and eventually to 100ft (30m).

Not so suitable for heavy or wet soil, but is native so pretty tough! Shade tolerant.
