These evergreen trees are already about 1m tall and produce sweet scented flowers in the spring, and edible fruits in the summer. Choose from either an orange, lime or grapefruit.

They can be trimmed to size to keep managable as an indoor tree, so are ideal for a conservatory or sun room, and can kept outdoors in the summer.

Untrimmed, the trees can grow up to about 10m tall with evergreen leaves.

Native Copper Beech, grown in a container to enable all year round planting. This variety is one of the first to produce green leaves in spring, and the autumn colours come later and stay on the stems all winter.

Medium green leaves turn rich copper in autumn.

For hedges 3ft (90cm) upwards Plant 9-18ins (23-45cm) apart. Trim in late summer.

In tree form, can reach 35ft (11m) in 20 years, and eventually to 100ft (30m).

Not so suitable for heavy or wet soil, but is native so pretty tough! Shade tolerant.

This interesting contorted hazel is easy to grown and adds interest to any garden, especially in winter, when the curious shape of the stems stand out against the sky.

Can grow quite large (6m or 20ft) but is slow growing, taking around 25 years to reach 3m.

Develops catkins in early spring. Fully hardy, prefers sunny or semi shade, and well drained soil.

Pieris 'Mountain Fire' Pieris 'Mountain Fire' Ref: FOpie01

Also known as the lily of the valley shrub, this hardy evergreen plant has thick, glossy, brilliant red young foliage, which matures into chestnut brown. In late spring, clusters of ivory bell-like flowers appear, giving the plant its unofficial name. The fierce red young leaves adds a focal interest point to a shady border.

Likes a moist, well-drained acid soil and shade from morning sun, and will tolerate full sun or partial shade. Remove faded flower-heads and frost damaged foliage in late spring.

Size now: approx 90cm tall, grown in a 23cm wide pot.
